Start your day Right!

Uncategorized

Morning routines are very important to me. It’s the beginning of the day and it sets the mood for the rest of the day. If you start it off on the wrong foot, it can be really easy to have your whole day just feel like it is falling apart.

I’m a creature of habit and when it comes to health and food, I find something I really enjoy eating that is nourishing and delicious and have that almost every day for a few weeks before I move on to another. To be honest, it makes my life easier and I have to think less about what to prepare for myself.

So how do I usually start my day?

What comes in, must go out.

I usually wake up early because I have to pee, but I also have my first bowel movement right as I wake up (I want to apologise for talking about poop, but I also do not want to apologise because it is part of a healthy body. If you aren’t moving your bowels at least once a day, you may need to seriously reconsider your diet choices: take in more fiber and drink more water!). After this I feel lighter, cleaner and ready to go on!

Swish. Swoosh. Swish. Swoosh.

Right after that I drink some water, then proceed to oil pulling. If you do not know what oil pulling is, let me explain it to you. You get about a tablespoon of virgin coconut oil (I use Extra Virgin Coconut Oil) and put it in your mouth and swish it around for 20 minutes. It can be hard to do this in the beginning, so work your way up and start at 5 minutes. Make sure not to swallow the oil as it is removing the toxins and bacteria from your mouth, and ingesting the oil would just erase all the good you did by oil pulling in the first place.

 Make the bed.

I thank Griselda for starting me on this habit. I used to just leave my bed undone because I knew I would return to it and mess it up all over again. But she helped me start my day with one productive thing. It really does set the mind up with the mindset of  “I did something” which always leads to “I can and want to do more”. So while I am oil-pulling, I often make my bed (which takes about a minute or less, really), flip my kale chips in the dehydrator (this one varies depending on what I am dehydrating if I am dehydrating anything at all), clean around my surroundings and anything else I can do without speaking. I usually am around my family, but do not speak because I really don’t want oil coming out of my mouth. Sometimes I respond with nods, and head shakes.

Brush.

After 20 minutes of oil pulling, I spit out the oil in the garden and brush my teeth.

Hydration Nation.

Next up is water. I drink about a liter and a half in the morning before I eat anything. Sometimes this will be water with cinnamon and calamansi, sometimes it is just plain water. This really helps me start the day because hydration as one of my top priorities. I live in the Philippines, and it is really hot here, especially with it being summer; it’s like walking inside an oven. We have to make sure we are able to keep our bodies hydrated at all times. It’s also really good to get lots of water in early in the morning because throughout our sleep we get quite dehydrated. So drink up!

Ginger Tea.

Peel. Chop. Boil. Simmer. Drink.

That’s pretty much it with the tea. I usually use both regular ginger and turmeric just to give it more oomph! I wait until it’s closer to warm since I don’t really enjoy drinking hot liquids that much. I do love squeezing some calamansi into it as well. Perfect for helping alkalize my system early in the day.

Probiotics.

I looooove me my healthy bacteria! I usually have it in the form of coconut yogurt or lately it has been Water Kefir (I made a trade with a friend, I gave her carrot loaves, she gave me kefir!) cause I like to get my probiotics in. I enjoy taking it in first thing so it can do its work without being bothered so much.

Real Food, Real Nourishment.

A few minutes later I have my breakfast of champions! This usually varies from freshly pressed juice, a giant smoothie, a fruit bowl, more coconut yogurt with fruit, or (on some days) a giant bowl of kale chips. Either way I like to have a raw breakfast as much as possible. It’s always good to start the day with as many nutrients as possible to help nourish your body. Raw food also digests so well and quickly that it won’t make you feel heavy. We want to feel light and energised!

Preparation is key!

If I have to work outside of my house, I prepare my meals (whenever possible) since I really don’t enjoy the feeling I get after eating out. Not all vegan food is created equal(ly nutritious) and I like to eat feel good food as much as possible!

What are feel good food? To put it simply, it is food that makes you feel GOOD! I think we should all be eating feel good food all the time, right? Food that give us energy and makes us feel like a million bucks!

I AM

Now this one can go in anytime of your morning. Your morning affirmation can set the tone for your entire day. So choose something you want to affirm, and keep it in mind for your entire day. It can be something you don’t even believe yet, but something you want to believe. If you keep saying it you will begin to believe it as well. Maybe the past day you felt a bit down end your day with an affirmation, wake up with an affirmation. It is also important to start the day with gratitude. Think of all the amazing things you have going on in your life, or the great people you share your energy with. Think of all you have to be grateful for, and acknowledge them. Say thank you. This takes just a few minutes, or even seconds and it could change the course of your entire day!

That’s pretty much the bulk of my morning routine, those are things that have become second nature to me and my body seems to automatically want to do in the morning. I feel great doing it so I won’t be stopping anytime soon.

How do you usually start your day? I’d love to know!
